This past winter, my sister went on a trip to Hawaii and being the wonderful sister that she is, she brought me back some rum and a bunch of beer to try. Some of the stuff, like Maui Brewing, I had seen before, but others were brand new to me. For instance, Primo Island Lager is a beer that I hadn't heard of before. Being an "Island Lager" I wasn't really expecting much, as they are usually meant more as a thirst quencher than a flavor forward beer. On the other hand, craft beers usually have to give you at least a unique and interesting flavor to survive in the beer market. I decided to be optimistic. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5nfVUEiba5bFeYSal4_QX139cSjuS1SWd4rpynfe84uEUe0iksc6iCm5uYD6-iRoM1rxohArJCRht3UR8nDIh1_2YtkWBi_dMgCyi2siyDXBhKj6kksz28eS8-KZsWFIh0qVssPEvp8M/s1600/IMG_1037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5nfVUEiba5bFeYSal4_QX139cSjuS1SWd4rpynfe84uEUe0iksc6iCm5uYD6-iRoM1rxohArJCRht3UR8nDIh1_2YtkWBi_dMgCyi2siyDXBhKj6kksz28eS8-KZsWFIh0qVssPEvp8M/s640/IMG_1037.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unfortunately my gut was correct. It is little more than an underwhelming lawn mower beer. It has a taste like sweet, grainy water. The flavor goes away quickly and leave only a slight sweet aftertaste. It isn't offensive, but it also doesn't make me what to drink it. I'm sure it would be much better sitting on a Hawaiian beach than on a cold winter night on the East Coast. Nonetheless, the only way I will be drinking another Primo is if I am in Hawaii and looking for a local beach beer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After minimal research, it turns out that Primo is owned by Pabst, which had I known that prior to tasting it, would probably have diminished my opinion even further. I'll leave it as: It is not a good beer, but it isn't offensive.</div>

Lees Harvest 2005 (Lagavulin)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am a big fan of Lagavulin 16 Year Scotch Whisky. Naturally, when I saw a beer that had been aged in Lagavulin casks, I jumped at the opportunity, regardless of the fact that it was about $17 for a 9.3 oz bottle. This is one of those beers that I am happy to have tried it, but I don't think I will be going back for seconds. </div>

I'm not sure what it was about this beer that I didn't particularly love. It could be that it is a Barelywine, a style that I don't particularly care for. It could be that it was aged for about 8 years by the time that I consumed it. It was just too sweet for me. There wasn't nearly enough Lagavulin for me to justify the amount of money I spent on such a small bottle. I am glad that I only gave myself a 2 oz tasting (I split it with my family). It was boozy and sweet, which in combination, is really unpleasant to me. I will be open to trying this again, provided it is on the younger side and the price is substantially less. Maybe my palate isn't refined enough for a beer this style. What I do know is that I didn't understand this beer and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Never pretend to like a beer that you don't. There is no reason to do that. </div>

I was honestly very surprised by this one. I didn't really know what to expect. I know that Abita has a couple beers that I really enjoy, specifically Turbodog (Brown ale), but I didn't know how a Helles Doppelbock would be. I've never had one before, how could I? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you may know, a Doppelbock is a dark, heavy German lager. I think this has more in common with the Maibock, which are traditionally as strong as Doppelbocks, but with a lighter color and less heavy flavor. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Andygator was very pleasant. It was largely dry, but had a sweet finish that you would associate with bocks. The malts and hops used are perfect for recreating a German style. It is a tad heavy on the alcohol for my tastes. You do get a little bit of booziness in the flavor, but that is more of a reflection on the style than the beer, I think. It would be a nice beer to share on a cool summer night. This is one that I will definitely be buying in the future. </div>

If you have read this blog before, then you probably know that I love Jolly Pumpkin. You might know that they produce a variety of funky, sour beers that I find to be delicious. Some people, however, aren't as big of a fan of the funk and some people love hops. You might think that Jolly Pumpkin has nothing to offer them. You are most likely wrong. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm not saying that hop heads will definitely like E.S. Bam, especially if they don't appreciate funky beers, but it does hold two extremes for Jolly Pumpkin. E.S. Bam is (in my opinion) the least funky of the JP beers as well as the hoppiest. It does have at least one thing in common with the others, it is damn refreshing. It is a seasonal April release, so you might be able to find it around now. The beer brings more hops and more malt to their Bam farmhouse ale, which add some interesting citrus and grassy aromas to the nose. The taste confused my palate for a bit until I got used to it, as there are so many different flavors competing for superiority. Once I got used to it, it turned out to be a very unique, refreshing beer.</div>

Certain IPAs are wonderfully balanced. This is a skill that
not every brewery has, or even wants, for that matter. It takes very little
skill to make a strong beer that is very heavy on the hops. Fortunately for the
producers of those beers, some people actually like that. Given the fact that I
run into so many unbalanced IPAs, it was a real treat to find Breckenridge 471
Double IPA.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
471 is a good deal easier drinking than it probably should
be. Since it is 9.2% ABV, you should be a bit careful that you don’t down it
too quick, and you might want to think about whether or not you want to drink a
few in one sitting. The beer itself is really nice. It is jammed full of hop
aroma and flavor. The bitterness is cut by a light sweetness from the malt. You
will get some nice citrusy notes and a hint of booziness, but nothing strong
enough to offend me. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
It doesn’t pack the insane punch that many DIPAs do. I would
put it somewhere in between IPA and DIPA, tending toward the IPA side in terms
of flavor. I personally found it to be a great beer and one that I would choose
over a lot of other DIPAs. If you like your hops, give it a shot.<o:p></o:p></div>

Some people only like only light beer, others only dark beer. Both of these sets are wrong. I know you can't really be wrong when it is a personal opinion, but nonetheless, they are wrong. As I have said before, all type of beer have their place. Sometimes, you just might not expect what that place is. </div>

Krombacher Dark is a relatively easy to find dark German lager. It is very light in alcohol (at 4.3%) and surprisingly light in body. Usually when people (who don't like it) hear about dark beer they think of ultra heavy, roasted beers. Dark German lager might be a bit roasty and malty, but they are in no way heavy. They were effectively designed to have a little bit bigger and different of a flavor than the common German light lagers, yet still designed in the same way. This means that they were meant to be consumed in mass quantity. Why do you think they are often served in 1 L steins? It's because the German love their beer and they know they can drink that much. Krombacher has all of the refreshing body of a light lager, but with a nice roasted flavor. It has a nice caramel sweetness, which is one of the things that separates it from the light lagers, which can be a little grainy sometimes. Like with many German beers, I could go into great depth describing the subtle nature of the beers components, but that isn't really the spirit of those beers. They are best enjoyed with a nice meal, good friends, and a good time. </div>

I am a pretty big fan of Sixpoint. I think that they produce great beer, have awesome designs, and are made up of some pretty great people. One thing that I love is that they are constantly producing new, interesting beers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Meet 3Beans, Sixpoint's (relatively) new canned beer. Like the Resin, it was released in the 12 ounce "Red Bull" cans. Unlike the Resin, it is a limited release (unless they decide to brew it again). As the name suggests, it is made with three different varieties of beans: cacao, coffee, and romano beans. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is one hefty beer. It is 10% ABV, which means that it was probably a good idea for them to only can in the 12 ouncers. It is a chocolate, coffee Baltic porter, so it has a good deal of body to it. This is a perfect beer for a cold night, dessert, or maybe if you need something to sustain you for a day. What it brings in body, it also brings in flavor. This was delicious. It certainly won't be for everyone, but if you like beers big and dark, then you will enjoy 3Beans immensely. I particularly loved the texture of the beer. I'm not sure if the addition of the beans had anything to do with it, but it seemed to be a little thicker and a little richer than most porters. Even though it was pretty expensive (~$15 for a 4 pack), it was also pretty damn worthwhile. At this point, you might be hard pressed to find it, but lucky for you, I still have some and I'm always willing to trade. </div>

One of the main reasons that people criticize Saranac is that they don't have many big, bold beers. What most people don't realize is that Saranac wants it that way. Their goal is to make a good variety of session-able beers (generally <5% ABV), that allow you to drink a couple and not get drunk. That being said, they are also receptive to the desires of the market. Since many craft beer fans want strong, big beers, Saranac started their High Peaks Series. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjL56me5s4tEpVfx27kRgmg9fFaWvX0hlasreCy8ULwD5eQr0SaM4DND_vqfGiZdLnQ5c5-dJXvDnRFWElE9qhyphenhyphenxwex1_PkSd5i2rfVcO0L-X34f-GW56H5wyJbDe4i8bZWNfjtIFk_oA/s1600/IMG_7290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjL56me5s4tEpVfx27kRgmg9fFaWvX0hlasreCy8ULwD5eQr0SaM4DND_vqfGiZdLnQ5c5-dJXvDnRFWElE9qhyphenhyphenxwex1_PkSd5i2rfVcO0L-X34f-GW56H5wyJbDe4i8bZWNfjtIFk_oA/s400/IMG_7290.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I indicated, the High Peaks Series is a line of beers that Saranac makes to be a little bigger, and in some cases, more experimental. Some of the recent ones are: Lemon Ginger Saison, Imperial IPA, Imperial Stout, Chocolate Orange Porter, and Wet Hop IPA. The Wet Hop IPA is the one I will be focusing on today. In case you are wondering, Wet Hop IPA indicates that the hops are not dried before they are used in the brewing process. The hops were used within 24 hours of being picked. Generally they are dried in kilns to preserve them better until the brewing process. Ideally, this gives a fresher hop flavor than dried hops can manage. In addition, the hops were all hand picked in New York State by friends of the brewery, which I'm sure made for a wonderful little event. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
While Saranac brewed this beer as a Double IPA, it is much lighter than most. It is only 7% ABV, so it is lighter in alcohol than many standard IPAs. Personally, I found the flavor of this beer to be fantastic. It was packed full of hops, but wasn't overwhelmingly bitter. The freshness was pretty apparent, though I'm not entirely sure if the same freshness couldn't be achieved by using dried hops. It is citrusy, but has a good maltiness in the body. It is everything that I like in an IPA, but on the lighter side. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you are one of those "big beer" kind of people, don't count Saranac out. Give the High Peaks Series a try. You might like it.</div>

There is always an argument to be made about which is better, Collaboration or Competition. In fact, I'm pretty sure I wrote my SAT essay on the topic. Within the craft beer industry, there is an interesting balance between competition and collaboration. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As a craft brewer, you obviously want to support other breweries, because the more people interested in craft beer, the bigger potential market you have. On the other hand, of that potential market, the more customers that you have, the better it is for your business. Basically, you want your competition to do well, but not better than you. One of the ways that brewers get people interested in craft beer is by collaborating with other well known brewers. I also imagine that they have some fun while they do it. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLwWv4hLggaFvQ9PGexIrg-4syzIwMiSNKJ9F6naQlzjMWSeRKhRRxNb8GFpM-pWZjhJ9Ze8gNuqzAGKTFXu-881byq9_3v6BZnRKmhjWuONEGO11S8n_V3v0uWl44-7llsAhCImFt_6I/s1600/IMG_7331.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLwWv4hLggaFvQ9PGexIrg-4syzIwMiSNKJ9F6naQlzjMWSeRKhRRxNb8GFpM-pWZjhJ9Ze8gNuqzAGKTFXu-881byq9_3v6BZnRKmhjWuONEGO11S8n_V3v0uWl44-7llsAhCImFt_6I/s640/IMG_7331.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Saison du Buff is a collaboration between Dogfish Head, Victory, and Stone. The beer was conceived together by the brewers from all three breweries. It is an American saison brewed with parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. As it sounds, it is an herby, hoppy, lemony saison. An interesting part about trying Saison du Buff is that you can find it in one of three bottles, depending on which brewery it was produced at. Each beer will taste a little different, and even though the Dogfish Head site says that the beer is 6.8% ABV, my bottle from Stone says 7.3%. It should also be noted that each of the bottles will cost different amount, depending on which brewery produced it (Dogfish is the most expensive). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The beer itself is very good, but not my favorite version of a saison (as I am kind of a saison purist). It is light and refreshing, hiding the 7% ABV well. Don't let the herbs scare you, they are actually overwhelmed by the citrus flavor in the beer (at least in the version that I tried). </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Saison du Buff is a good beer, not great. It is probably a little overpriced (especially the DFH version), but I am glad that I tried it. </div>

The Kölsch is one of my favorite spring/summer styles. If you are unfamiliar with the style, Kölsch are the regional style of the the city of Köln (Cologne), Germany. They are very similar to lighter lagers in flavor, although they are warm fermented (using an ale yeast). They are characteristically light, with a noticeable hop bitterness, but still maintain a nice malty sweetness. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are three main Kölsch brands available in the US. I color code them based on their labels. Red and Blue are the two most common, so I was very happy when I found Sünner, the green one. They are all very similar, but with their own distinctive touches that are very hard to describe. It is a very clean, crisp beer, with an almost fruity sweetness that balances the beer out nicely. This is partially a result of the yeast used to ferment the beer. Since each brand uses their own yeast to ferment their particular brews, the esters produced will impart different flavors, even if they are subtle (as they are in Kölsch beers). I feel that, especially in the US, the Kölsch is an under appreciated style, mostly because people don't know much about it. I wish that would change. I also truthfully believe that there is a big step between true Kölsch and American remakes. Give them a shot, but do yourself a favor and grab a German one. You won't be disappointed. </div>

Here is an example of an American IPA that I didn't enjoy, although not for the reason that you might think. Generally, I find American IPAs to be too big on hops, leaving the beer unbalanced and aggressive to drink. This isn't like that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I generally don't like beers that have silly names for no reason. My personal preference is when the name has some significance (based on ingredients, location, history, etc). This being said, I have tried beers with what I consider to be stupid names that I have actually really enjoyed. This beer actually has mellow hops, but I found the backbone to be very grainy. I felt like the hops and the malts did not blend together well. This wouldn't be a beer that I would send back, but then again, I never do that. Never. I found it strange that I could taste the alcohol in a beer that is only 6.2% ABV. I don't think that should happen. I can't say I'll be tempted to get another one of these anytime soon.</div>

Lucas Confectionery and Wine Bar<div style="text-align: center;">
Since I'm in grad school right now, home base for me is Troy, NY. Now, most people will be confused about where Troy is, but those do actually know where it is probably thought something along the lines of, "Living in Troy? That suuuuucks." I am going to do a few different posts about why Troy is actually a really fun place to live. Fortunately for me, most of these reasons have to do with the nightlife. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyxnMQHvfgX7YFgg0yd7YLiDpJ9VRxfnMYf-QXGWPNDnpUaEtYeL7J-GpxtjVATl6vPiwdYudhwMByYAuEKU5zj7fnan-mWpm-9utGAxFdR_v2gg67DtxNl2o6Hq3iGvHlE5b2hyqzxNM/s1600/IMG_1101.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyxnMQHvfgX7YFgg0yd7YLiDpJ9VRxfnMYf-QXGWPNDnpUaEtYeL7J-GpxtjVATl6vPiwdYudhwMByYAuEKU5zj7fnan-mWpm-9utGAxFdR_v2gg67DtxNl2o6Hq3iGvHlE5b2hyqzxNM/s640/IMG_1101.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of my new favorite venues in Troy is the Charles F. Lucas Confectionery and Wine Bar. It is a nice little wine bar built on the site of the former Charles F. Lucas Confectionery, hence the name. There are a couple key reasons why I love this place. First and foremost is the people. Vic and Heather are the owners and they go out of their way to make you feel welcome, even when the place is packed. I always love it when owners take the time to remember customer faces. The staff is very helpful and they are always glad to lend a suggestion (or find someone to do that) if you ask. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2OJjWJZ9YLMFZ2C4WG6y8jAuPNejFE0rrhqSaxhOaGOKcMcqT_Gac1Xm5PmrUVjRHZ0jsM1merYV0PFqarAhoOO7bV4LwYDzU0IxSZPP6YYs5fTmW-aDAtsQoYdcTPnOAHaj-f5soZYk/s1600/IMG_0785.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2OJjWJZ9YLMFZ2C4WG6y8jAuPNejFE0rrhqSaxhOaGOKcMcqT_Gac1Xm5PmrUVjRHZ0jsM1merYV0PFqarAhoOO7bV4LwYDzU0IxSZPP6YYs5fTmW-aDAtsQoYdcTPnOAHaj-f5soZYk/s400/IMG_0785.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another reason why the Confectionery kicks ass is that they have a nice selection of cured meats and cheeses. They do perfect pairings with the charcuterie as well (Fig with a blue cheese, etc) that really add to the experience. This is something that you just don't find around it. It make the Confectionery a perfect place for a non-dinner date. You can go and get a couple glasses of wine, nibble on some food, grab some dessert (it is called the Confectionery for more than one reason). The atmosphere is a little higher class than some of the other places around. Personally I take this as an excuse to get dressed up a bit (I wore a bow tie to their opening night), but you are welcome in jeans as well as a suit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQrvNtD34okC6oB1pBDLQFzK2Vr74il6_6TbzoBj6OwH1I4k4FAWHlT7rS1xO6o0qKJywSGITSCd0XRM_rXInGXZ1u7GLKO9z64pXolETEgosO61Gq4IagpseND_D6TkbuvmGVuk2GtpM/s1600/IMG_1102.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQrvNtD34okC6oB1pBDLQFzK2Vr74il6_6TbzoBj6OwH1I4k4FAWHlT7rS1xO6o0qKJywSGITSCd0XRM_rXInGXZ1u7GLKO9z64pXolETEgosO61Gq4IagpseND_D6TkbuvmGVuk2GtpM/s640/IMG_1102.jpg" width="476" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
While I appreciate wine, I like beer a bit more, so I was very happy to see that they have a relatively small, yet well made beer list. My only complaint about it is that they don't have Saison Dupont, but it is hard to demand that of every bar that I go to (even though it would go well with the rest of the wine bar). They have a variety of styles, and for the most part don't have too many of one style, even having an interesting and uncommon German style, Gose. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On any given weekend night, this place is absolutely swamped with people. Getting there early is better so you can grab a table or counter. I don't have any pictures of the decor that do it any justice, but trust me, the place is beautiful. The only real problem is that it seems that demand is exceeding the size and it can be difficult to get to the bar sometimes. Fortunately, they are expanding to another building nearby, which, when it is completed, should be able to accomodate everyone that wants to be there. If you are in Troy and you're looking to have a good evening, I would highly suggest the Charles F. Lucas Confectionery. Don't believe me, check it out yourself.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you don't feel like going there for a drink (I'm not sure why you would, but) the Confectionery is open during the day as a coffee bar as well. Pretty damn good coffee too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Update:</b> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They have Saison Dupont! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With a newly revamped beer list, the Confectionery is better than ever. By the sound of things, I will be spending many nights hanging out and sipping some fine, less common beers. The Grocery that Heather and Vic are going to open up (around the corner) will also carry a nice selection of great beer. I am overwhelmingly excited for this. </div>

I used to love Scaldis, also known as Bush Ambrée. It was one of the first Belgian beers that I liked. It isn't all that expensive either (when compared to other Belgian beers). It was the best of both worlds at the time, cheap and delicious.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirlkkkdd5L-o8EPNVP7KnmMhApDQW31AFnI0F1MWXs-lCSWMpe0vqPzN79BEKjyUlwezJCZ3Un9O6yYYxSAxGqFQoPY5VngJOxvKjyFsJgX37OD0sIwWWYHiJk-JjnJnmSJhWY_aNsPyU/s1600/IMG_0821.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirlkkkdd5L-o8EPNVP7KnmMhApDQW31AFnI0F1MWXs-lCSWMpe0vqPzN79BEKjyUlwezJCZ3Un9O6yYYxSAxGqFQoPY5VngJOxvKjyFsJgX37OD0sIwWWYHiJk-JjnJnmSJhWY_aNsPyU/s400/IMG_0821.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, I guess actually the best of 3 worlds. The alcohol content is 12% ABV, so it packs a serious wallop. Throughout college, the goal was to get drunk. I still wanted to get drunk with my friends, but I wanted to do it in a classier, more delicious way. Scaldis was effectively tailor made for this purpose. First of all, it is a Strong Belgian Pale Ale. It is very tasty, good and malty, but with subtle hops rounding it out. The booziness is abundantly apparent, but sometimes I really like when I can taste the alcohol. The cherry on top of the sunday is that Scaldis isn't all that heavy in body. I could (and did) drink more than one of these guys in a sitting. It absolutely will get you drunk. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I have refined my palate, the booziness is a little less appealing. I also don't want to get staggering drunk off of like 3 beers, so I have to plan my moments with Scaldis carefully. I still like it, but I think I have outgrown the love affair that I used to have with it. I would still suggest it as beginner Belgian, as it has a lot of the characteristics that I like and is quite approachable. </div>

If there is one thing that I dislike about the majority of the US craft beer industry, it is the obsession with the IPA. If you have read my blog before, then you know this. It isn't that I really dislike the style. It is more that I think it is overblown. I feel that the way people generally go about rating IPAs is: the hoppier the better. Hops are great. Beer wouldn't be beer without them, but as with everything, they can be overdone. That being said, here is one of the best standard IPAs that I have ever tried. It is balanced, pleasant, and wasn't overhyped. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCKN9bS2Tv5KuWkhdsRduFcl1A2l1hsD2eC6N6F7ZqG7Xwh_Sv24rI6nTj0QEeuZboBTjpTOjne_w5j5i0xdRaIx8G1X_KTFS0IX6yEymvkaRumXzMSNPxY0fqniaP8o29RrYnZRwWOvU/s1600/IMG_1064.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCKN9bS2Tv5KuWkhdsRduFcl1A2l1hsD2eC6N6F7ZqG7Xwh_Sv24rI6nTj0QEeuZboBTjpTOjne_w5j5i0xdRaIx8G1X_KTFS0IX6yEymvkaRumXzMSNPxY0fqniaP8o29RrYnZRwWOvU/s640/IMG_1064.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I must admit, I don't know much about Ballast Point. This is the first beer that I have tried from them, but based on this one, it will certainly not be the last. If you like beer, you know what an IPA tastes like (part of the reason why I think people cling to the style), so I will skip over the flavors in the beer and go straight to why I liked it so much: It isn't too big (even though it is 7% ABV). It doesn't try too hard. It is very flavorful, but doesn't leave your mouth dry, and it doesn't leave it coated in hop resin, even though it is jam packed with hops. I know when I want one of the over-hopped, big IPAs and it is when I want a beer that makes me feel like I've been in a fight when I finish it. For most other occasions, I want a beer that would allow me to drink another right after it. Sculpin IPA is one of the only true-to-style American IPAs that allows me to do this. Buy it if you see it. </div>

I am shocked and appalled at myself for not doing a post on Innis & Gunn yet. I first became acquainted with I&G while studying abroad in Scotland. The owners were doing a tasting in a local liquor store, so I got a chance to try a bunch of their beer and chat with the guys. What is interesting about I&G, is that their focus is less on different styles, and more on different oak. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHHeTa9QY5EyI_ybWdCEXMcHayEkueWNz9cvgVzwCFFOiiyX1iOf5Q4lvQKUUrayx_V9miH4v1i9cBUw-zdDmOD7j0lgj7PMVHt-qzMOmdtVGTU45SoQ7pvksL4WxN1Ehqe48P-YQUGcM/s1600/IMG_7283.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHHeTa9QY5EyI_ybWdCEXMcHayEkueWNz9cvgVzwCFFOiiyX1iOf5Q4lvQKUUrayx_V9miH4v1i9cBUw-zdDmOD7j0lgj7PMVHt-qzMOmdtVGTU45SoQ7pvksL4WxN1Ehqe48P-YQUGcM/s400/IMG_7283.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The business model of I&G is to have their beer contract brewed for them, then age the beer for different amounts of time in different casks. The casks will impart a whole variety of flavors to the beer. What is great about I&G is that they release a new beer about every season. This particular beer was the first stout that I have seen from them. It was bitier, rather than creamy, which I can certainly deal with and in fact, sometimes prefer. The use of an Irish whiskey cask imparted a whole range of flavors to the beer that I can't even begin to explain. Effectively, the purpose of this post is to spread the word. Innis & Gunn produced a large variety of oak aged beer with casks and styles to please everyone. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, I would strongly suggest you give them a shot. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oddly enough, their standard beer is my least favorite because it is too sweet (by far the sweetest one they have).</div>

Beer festivals are interesting events. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, yet the goal is largely the same: Bring in a bunch of people to try a variety of beer. It takes virtually no effort to have an enjoyable time at a beer festival, but it does take a little bit of planning to do one right. This post will be spent guiding you through my experience at the Spring 2013 NYC Craft Beer Festival, while simultaneously giving some advice on how to approach the event properly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 1:</b> <b>Find someone to go with and get your tickets</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can bring as many or as few people as you want to a beer festival, but there are some general rules, all of which are fairly obvious.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. The people going should like both drinking beer, as well as talking about it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. You should enjoy the company of the people going.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. If in a large group, you should be comfortable with separating and meeting back up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Personally, I like small groups (2-5 people) because you get to share the experience with a few people, but the group isn't too large. For this particular event, my favorite sister, Maria, joined me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once you have decided on your partner-in-drinking, make sure to get the tickets before they sell out, which is the case at a lot of beer festivals.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 2: Make sure you have your tickets and arrive early</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuTmBr1M2xA1weDmY6L6ZJXmTSB4IWhvlaIpQhamqkDlVvK32_utY05hEIDAYFaBqVwz2XKjVaMRa_m7tPxNiDqrE043wLVapYqgaPrmSFCl9MsJiaA6AUzZR8WUsFOBmFj3Uja5L-SEc/s1600/IMG_1118.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuTmBr1M2xA1weDmY6L6ZJXmTSB4IWhvlaIpQhamqkDlVvK32_utY05hEIDAYFaBqVwz2XKjVaMRa_m7tPxNiDqrE043wLVapYqgaPrmSFCl9MsJiaA6AUzZR8WUsFOBmFj3Uja5L-SEc/s640/IMG_1118.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The tickets that we got were given to us by a wonderful friend, so they were waiting at will call. We had no idea what type of tickets they were (VIP, General Admission, etc), so we showed up about 30 minutes prior to the VIP entrance time. By the time we had out tickets in hand (and found out they were GA), there was an hour and 15 minutes before we were allowed to go in. At this point, the line for general admission was about 20 people long, so we decided to just wait. Thank God we got in line (eventually the line spanned about an entire long NYC block). Hanging out on line for an hour isn't fun, but neither is getting into the event late. All you need to do is just chat with the people around you and make a plan for your tasting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 3: Plan your tastings</b></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Before you enter the event, you should have a good idea of the the breweries that you want to visit first. My suggestion is always to try the rare ones first (either breweries that your area doesn't normally have, or beers that are hard to find). These events are usually 2+ hours long, so you will have time to try as much beer as you want. Unfortunately not all of the beer will last that long. The Night Stalker, from Goose Island was one of those beers. Within 15 minutes of the general admission, they were on their last 2 bottles. I was fortunate enough to try it and I'm glad I did. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 4: Be adventurous and don't be afraid to dump beer</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA5SQRTwLQpL0Rc70hFeVlxxsCVHSpyera5sipGHveFdcoHGM8d4PfSQnqZM9_V4J_ZZDnpQKFF9j9i5hcJliUyj4YSeZDZ9AMl9nFxOxBwVDFX2l-WLfdjHXeCo3tWDyuK8wxI0scKI4/s1600/IMG_1126.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA5SQRTwLQpL0Rc70hFeVlxxsCVHSpyera5sipGHveFdcoHGM8d4PfSQnqZM9_V4J_ZZDnpQKFF9j9i5hcJliUyj4YSeZDZ9AMl9nFxOxBwVDFX2l-WLfdjHXeCo3tWDyuK8wxI0scKI4/s640/IMG_1126.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a beer tasting. You absolutely should not be drinking the beer you drink everyday. You should try new things. Bayou Teche is a brewery out of Louisiana that I have never heard of before. The Boucanee is a smoked beer that they make. I honestly had no idea what it would be like before I tried it. Turns out, it is awesome! This is precisely the reason I like beer festivals: They allow me to try a bunch of new beers easily. Unfortunately, not all beers turn out to be as good as the Boucanee. Some are downright unappealing. After a few beer festivals and some wonderful hangovers, I have learned that you don't need to drink all of the beer. You can have a good, tipsy time easily enough only drinking the beer that you like. If you don't like a beer, pour it out and try another. I can all but guarantee that you won't be able to try all of the beers, so you will never run out of options. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 5: Pace yourself </b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTJjNQPvnIpy9orPed44U5wagmtkDzw6Qq-iAiKHY7YbHKEQppVgLutYmQ5T_zTc_E99x5tJmm5vumgiJO8NjjCd6XxUo9FHuRJ5zYSd4cv-o5ocDmrAIMR20T-V8UrHVkKKinKSh6M0s/s1600/IMG_1121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTJjNQPvnIpy9orPed44U5wagmtkDzw6Qq-iAiKHY7YbHKEQppVgLutYmQ5T_zTc_E99x5tJmm5vumgiJO8NjjCd6XxUo9FHuRJ5zYSd4cv-o5ocDmrAIMR20T-V8UrHVkKKinKSh6M0s/s320/IMG_1121.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is really hard to pace yourself as well. You want to get your money's worth and you don't usually drink out of such small glasses. It is really hard to tell how much you are drinking. My method is to take a lap around the event, making sure to try all of the beer that I couldn't live without. Once that is done, take a little break, sip on the beer I have, and chat with someone. There are usually a wide array of reps, brewers, and knowledgeable volunteers that are really happy to talk to you. Maria and I had conversations with the daughter of brewery owners, the founder of Untappd, and several reps from various distributors and companies. It is a really easy, fun way to keep yourself from forgetting the entire event. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 6: Eat something</b></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqMa-s3AwZdaYuUwiu1hG14WVBsHIKexcWWfg4xw64p2tdUWwkC7cxgK6PoLCTPNEIq63Osle-h2FkTrBOANUlUVYd77Q6Qj0M5OTBJ54Tt7OMP_LHR_BN1411_doZ_4NK-gs11jSETKY/s1600/IMG_1125.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqMa-s3AwZdaYuUwiu1hG14WVBsHIKexcWWfg4xw64p2tdUWwkC7cxgK6PoLCTPNEIq63Osle-h2FkTrBOANUlUVYd77Q6Qj0M5OTBJ54Tt7OMP_LHR_BN1411_doZ_4NK-gs11jSETKY/s400/IMG_1125.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You will be putting away a ton of beer throughout the festival. On one of your breaks, wander over to the food section and eat. For goodness sake, you are skin and bones! Eat! It will be delicious, and keep your stomach from revolting. I didn't take any pictures of my snack, as I was completely engrossed with eating it, but I had a delicious savory pie. Maria had a tasty pulled pork sandwich. I can tell you that your money would be much better spent on a sandwich than that "Beer Diva" shirt that you've had your eye on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 7: Enjoy yourself</b></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm-iyrY_RH9lfqhq0hMywmjWPRAeODR3wN-GIAE8xt0Kwl-Eq318gaX_DuLWarMb1MWaJX5M4q7i6mMD92R-cGuTf6UMaQBJ51ndi9s3TOQ0UHfMqDGMyIfL16uAKX8P5lfu0WwlyaOzE/s1600/IMG_1124.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm-iyrY_RH9lfqhq0hMywmjWPRAeODR3wN-GIAE8xt0Kwl-Eq318gaX_DuLWarMb1MWaJX5M4q7i6mMD92R-cGuTf6UMaQBJ51ndi9s3TOQ0UHfMqDGMyIfL16uAKX8P5lfu0WwlyaOzE/s400/IMG_1124.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The rules be damned! Just go about the festival however you want. The steps above are how I get the most out of the festival. Some people want to go and get drunk. That'll be an easy one. Whatever you do a beer festival, make sure you have a good time. Relax and enjoy yourself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 8: Closing Time</b></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF-na4PR0IZnVk1RHF0XinU5vq1tv5ngkmGkrh2qiCDEfpTLt9T5q6SZP6vJjdes9jHMrYJCnqNUOYV6KLAXXLL-jq7cw1k8Wfo_MQ7B3fHlRYqbKxEpGfo0l8x1CFzI2u7H9l0ZMpHNs/s1600/IMG_1129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF-na4PR0IZnVk1RHF0XinU5vq1tv5ngkmGkrh2qiCDEfpTLt9T5q6SZP6vJjdes9jHMrYJCnqNUOYV6KLAXXLL-jq7cw1k8Wfo_MQ7B3fHlRYqbKxEpGfo0l8x1CFzI2u7H9l0ZMpHNs/s320/IMG_1129.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As the festival starts to come to a close, the breweries will stop pouring and you will be given a gentle reminder to get the hell out in a few minutes. As you finish up your beer, walk around and if you see something that you like, ask someone if you can have it. The Goose Island guys were nice enough to give me this glass, simply because I asked. This isn't a rare occasion, either. I have come away from beer festivals with a tap handle, a serving tray, a Brooklyn Brewery flag, glasses, bottle openers, and even entire beers. I didn't even steal these things (don't be an ass and steal from these people). Just ask them at the end and a lot of times you will get it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 9: Nap</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Seriously, it will do wonders.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Each festival has a different feel to it. If you find one you like, keep going. Personally, they all have their own charms. </div>

Far and away, I consider Samuel Smith's to be my favorite English beer company. They have a large variety of styles to choose from and they all refuse to disappoint me. They are skilled in the arts of making pale, dark, light, or heavy beers. One thing that the beers have in common is their quality. Sam Smith's makes beer that stands apart from many other English brewers for one main reason: I think that they have complex taste. </div>

I absolutely had to buy this when I saw it. I'm a fan of chocolate stouts, but I also know that they can be easily messed up. Sam Smith does it right. It isn't like any American chocolate stout that I have tried (they tend to be bigger beers, more focus on the stout). They managed to make a beer that tastes like beautiful blend between a nice, dry stout, and a chocolate bar (but a good chocolate bar). They keep it from being very sweet at all, while still making you feel like you have a glass full of dessert. Even though it is only 5% ABV, I could only really have one glass. This is one of those beers that shares really well. I just want something a little different from a beer that I will drink a lot. If you like chocolate, I would highly suggest it. </div>

Not all gambles go well, even in the beer world. I bought this one mainly because I saw two separate things: Wild Ale and Belgium. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip9xaLR2L_FTDGYTrXC2Arfhwb66ChDurYn6AhZXHY53lVlbqtgJrUP4UJ5Ram6pIoJk5zxgaM9VeTN-CKqWBpn_qOrD2eCmg9229_Nist4l30Wn2ehT8J41OlX8HW-mNdkw7vQO_vTao/s1600/IMG_0975.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip9xaLR2L_FTDGYTrXC2Arfhwb66ChDurYn6AhZXHY53lVlbqtgJrUP4UJ5Ram6pIoJk5zxgaM9VeTN-CKqWBpn_qOrD2eCmg9229_Nist4l30Wn2ehT8J41OlX8HW-mNdkw7vQO_vTao/s640/IMG_0975.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Generally what I expect when I see "wild ale" is a beer that has a good deal of funk to it. Depending on what kind of wild ale (brown, saison, blonde, etc) you will get different levels of malt to balance out the tart that comes from the wild yeast. This happens to be a blonde ale, so I was expecting a lighter body beer, with a good deal of alcohol (9% ABV), but with a substantial funk to it. This isn't what I received. There is a good chance that it was just a bad bottle from sitting for too long or something of the sort, but all that I tasted was grainy malt flavor with a good deal of alcohol and only the slightest hint of sour. It could have been my fault (I didn't check the date), but it is unfortunate nonetheless. I don't want to give up hope because the style has great potential. This time, my gamble didn't work out. Next time I try it, I will make sure it is fresh. </div>

I have briefly talked about aging beer in some of my former posts. From now on, when I talk about the idyllic beer to cellar, think of this one. When this beer was released, I wasn't even legal to drink yet. It was released in the summer of 2009. My parents bought a bottle (may or may not have been at my request) shortly after it was released, then we proceeded to leave it in the wine cellar and forget about it. </div>

We forgot about it until the fall of 2012. While 3.5 years isn't all that long when it comes to aging beer, just imagine how hard it is to not drink a beer that you own for that time span. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am always afraid that I won't like imperial stouts because I have tried ones that have put me off of the style. They are often aggressive, lead-heavy and the bourbon barrel aged ones can be so complex that it is hard to get your taste buds to function properly. Maybe my issue is that I don't let them mature. This beer was far and away the best imperial stout that I have ever tried. It was unbelievably smooth and the aging allowed the flavors to mellow. The roasted malts blended so well together with the sweetness from the bourbon barrel. The booziness was nonexistent, which is impressive for an 11.2% ABV beer. I could have consumed the entire thing if it weren't for things like "sharing", "family", and "the fact that it wasn't actually my beer".</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next time I find an Old Rasputin (preferably an anniversary) I am going to buy it and cellar it. It is amazing what a few year can do to improve the overall beer drinking experience. I'll call it an investment. </div>

I might be a beer snob, but I am also an equal opportunity beer snob. I don't care if a beer is mass produced or craft brewed as long as it tastes good. The correlation just happens to be that most of the time, the beers that I enjoy are craft brewed. Still, I don't want to be accused of being uninformed, so I will occasionally try some extremely mass produced beers. Even if I know I will dislike them, I try them, if for no other reason than to have justification for my overly aggressive remarks at beer commercials. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a vague memory of someone who's beer opinion I trust, telling me that Foster's Premium isn't half bad. Either I made up this memory, or they meant that it was completely bad, because this beer was terrible. I'm sure that "premium" means that the alcohol content has been boosted (to a staggering 5.5% ABV). It basically tasted like boozy Foster's. The only redeeming part about this silly purchase of mine was that it only cost about $2 for a giant can. Still, there are similarly cheap, bigger cans of better beer available, so I can't really see myself ever trying this again. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Please allow me to introduce you to a beer that (unless you were one of the 8 other people with whom I shared it) you will probably never get the chance to try. Seriously, there were only about 250 kegs and 500 bottles produced. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This big-ass bottle of Saison Dupont Dry Hopping 2011 was, as it sounds, a dry hopped version of Saison Dupont that was brewed in 2011. It was given to me as a Christmas present by my sister's wonderful boyfriend, Howie. He managed to lug this thing back from his trip across Europe. For that, I am eternally grateful. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Brasserie Dupont is one of my favorite breweries, not because they have one beer that I love, but because they have a lot of beer, all different, that I love. This gave me a chance to try yet another beer that I now love. It was very similar to standard Saison Dupont in many respects. It differed in that it had a slightly maltier, heavier body, and a bit more hop bitterness. It was a different beer. I drank it at this past Christmas, when it was a year aged, which in hindsight was probably a mistake. Lighter beers should be consumed sooner to get the full effect. Nevertheless, it was still a wonderful beer that came in a large enough vessel that I was able to share it with my whole family, which is quite a task. </div>

Whoo Boy! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you like your beers sour, I certainly have a beer for you here. Tart of Darkness is a release from The Bruery that blends the roasted flavors of a stout with the tartness of a sour beer. And they don't skimp on the sour. The first thing that you might notice about this beer is the hefty price tag (I bought it for ~$25). Originally, this was too much to consider. However, my local beer store had a pretty convincing way to make me buy it: As I was asking the cashier about it, he stopped me, walked to the back of the store, grabbed a bottle and cracked it open. A taste test was enough. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEb83Awo28hfaZTfJyAFImFB3ryKz3ksUo5BbE-E0yRQ2ZILAhfSXIByrKJOgdgUUry8phcJEEvB2hzCw0Ig4ye2nNk_GJTQm9LLq4ydtgbd6OeKn35gPmU9SJ8TomyXmOsqLan5EdU1Y/s1600/IMG_7319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEb83Awo28hfaZTfJyAFImFB3ryKz3ksUo5BbE-E0yRQ2ZILAhfSXIByrKJOgdgUUry8phcJEEvB2hzCw0Ig4ye2nNk_GJTQm9LLq4ydtgbd6OeKn35gPmU9SJ8TomyXmOsqLan5EdU1Y/s640/IMG_7319.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The sour in this beer is overwhelming in the most wonderful sense of the word. It is like sticking a black cherry warhead in your mouth. You will immediately feel it behind your jaw, but then subtle hints of cherry roll onto your taste buds. There is only the slightest hint of stout in the flavor, noticeable alongside a hint of oak. It is a beer for the senses, jet black, wonderful off the nose, and full of complex flavors. I know that the cost might deter most, but maybe go in with a few people to at least try it. Trust me, it is worth a try.</div>

Holy Damn. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That was my initial reaction to tasting this beer. I picked it up while visiting Boston because:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A) I've had some Notch beer before that I enjoyed,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
B) Notch does not distribute to NY,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
C) Table Beers might be one of my favorite styles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Frankly, it's a bit of a travesty that I haven't posted about Notch yet, as they are rapidly climbing the ladder on my list of favorite American breweries. They specialize in Session beers, which I have talked about. To refresh your memory, Session beers are meant to be low in alcohol and light and refreshing in flavor. The BJCP defines session ales as beers with less than 5% ABV. Notch kind of takes this to a fantastic extreme, with their most alcoholic beer sitting at 4.5% ABV. I could go on and on about Notch, but I'll save some for other posts. For now I will just talk about the Tafelbier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Tafelbier (Table Beer) is a style that was very popular in Belgium for serving with dinner. The entire family would drink the beer, including children. Now, before you freak out about this, know that in Belgium (like many countries), the parents have the option of introducing their children to beer at a younger age. Table beers are also known for being extremely low in alcohol. Table beers are less common in Belgian homes now-a-days, getting replaced by sodas and the like, unfortunately. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Notch did the world (and the US beer industry) a favor by brewing their Tafelbier. The Tafelbier is Notch Brewing's lowest ABV beer, coming in at 2.8%. It is also delightfully refreshing and crisp. It has beautiful floral notes that are complemented well by the subtle hops. It is one of the more thirst-quenching beers that I have ever tried. I cannot wait for them to release it again (it is a summer seasonal) so that I can buy a case to slake my summer thirst. </div>

Happy Spring! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now that Spring is here (although the NY weather disagrees), it is about time that I talk about another one of my favorite warm weather drinks: The Geuze. A Geuze is a type of lambic that is made by blending together young (1 year) and old lambics (2-3 years old), which then undergoes a second fermentation. The wild yeasts that perform the fermentation give the beer a sour, dry taste, with a fine, champagne-like carbonation. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oude Geuze Boon is one of the easier to find geuze beers. This by no means indicates that it is lesser in any way, shape, or form. The fun part about Geuze beers is that each brand has a small tweak that sets it apart from the others. Not that any are better than the others, they are just different. Geuze Boon happens to be pretty fruity, but not in the way you might think. It is full of sour apple notes and hints of sour citrus. Apart from these general flavors, everyone will pick up on different smells and flavors. It is kind of the nature of the geuze to be a little hard to pinpoint. Regardless, I love drinking a geuze when it gets warm out because they are light, refreshing and unbelievably addictive. Seriously, when I drink one, I pretty much only want to drink geuezes from then on. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I would suggest that you drink your geuze first if you are planning a succession of drinks, as the flavors can be really altered by drinking other styles before, especially hoppy ones. Make your geuze experience pure and enjoy it! </div>

It has been far too long since I last mentioned Jolly Pumpkin (almost 2 months)! Bam Noire might just be the best dark saison that I have ever tried. I am tempted to say that it is my favorite Jolly Pumpkin beer, but please don't make me choose. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4VgykP_2pg2O04V_84vukXPFdZWwSuL2NKqQDl_FjcAKEB7e8D8B7MfrRI2D1zIlVuzthAM1Rw5xmXVoWl8gWXvvOUG0qweAxAMoP6TES8P0TRCObT_DuEx0_b4MyRkHvzdtziAKlLns/s1600/IMG_7120.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4VgykP_2pg2O04V_84vukXPFdZWwSuL2NKqQDl_FjcAKEB7e8D8B7MfrRI2D1zIlVuzthAM1Rw5xmXVoWl8gWXvvOUG0qweAxAMoP6TES8P0TRCObT_DuEx0_b4MyRkHvzdtziAKlLns/s640/IMG_7120.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bam Noire, obviously part of Jolly Pumpkin's Bam Series (named after their dog), is a 4.3% ABV dark farmhouse ale. It has all of the funk that you would expect from a Jolly Pumpkin beer, but some added complexity from the darker malts. The taste has a hint of roast, but is dominated by dried and tart fruit. This is one of those beers that you will get different notes depending on outside factors, such as the temperature, as well as any beer that you might have had before. Generally when I drink Bam Noire, I like it to be one of my first couple beers, with the only prior beers being lighter funky beers. Another lovely thing about Jolly Pumpkin beers are that they are great for home brewers. The labels come off very easy and the bottles are a perfect size. </div>
